Why legends disappear on short notice
A ride's public closing announcement is usually the last step of a decision made quarters earlier. Big steel from the 1990s is entering its fourth decade, and keeping it running means major reinvestment — enthusiast communities widely point to the economics of supporting 30-year-old track, where a full retracking can rival the budget of a new ride. When a park decides that math doesn't work, the announcement and the final ride can be weeks apart. If a ride matters to your family, ride it when you can — "someday" has a quiet expiration date.

Nothing here has an official closing date; this is context, not news. California's Great America operates on land sold in a lease-back arrangement and has been widely reported as likely to close after the 2027 season — unconfirmed by the park, and we'll move it to the table above the day it isn't. Beyond that, the category to watch is 1990s-era steel at every major chain, for the support-cost reasons described above. When an official date lands, it shows up here.
